School of Medicine Presents “Creating an Inclusive Academic Medicine Environment: Teaching Across Social Identities,” Dec. 8

Join Creighton’s School of Medicine on Wednesday, Dec. 8, for the second of a four-part faculty development series, as professionals explore creating inclusive academic medicine environments, respectful of all social identities.

“Creating an Inclusive Academic Medicine Environment: Teaching Across Social Identities” will be held noon to 1 p.m. (MST), 1 to 2 p.m. (CST). Add to your calendar and join via Zoom. Registration is not required.

Creighton health professions faculty and staff work with learners of multiple identities. Erika Dakin Kirby, PhD, professor of Communication Studies and the A.F. Jacobson Chair in Communication, will speak about why it’s important we teach, communicate and give feedback in a manner that respects and honors the intersectional identities of our learners, and how this can impact and enrich our learning environments.

This session seeks to:

  • Define social identity and what it means to teach across social identities
  • Define ethnocentrism, “white-mindedness,” and its relation to teaching and learning
  • Expand on the concepts of cultural humility
  • Offer communication-centered practices for teaching more inclusively

This meeting is open to all health professionals in the Creighton community.
