Fine and Performing Arts Department: Hosts Nebraska Art Teacher Association Conference

Creighton’s studio art program within the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, along with the Joslyn Art Museum, hosted the 2021 Nebraska Art Teacher Association (NATA) Conference on Oct. 23 at the Lied Education Center for the Arts and the Mike and Josie Harper Center. More than 70 art educators from across the state came to Creighton, engaging in meaningful dialogues and interactive workshops taught by Nebraska art educators. Creighton Scheerer Scholar Fellows volunteered to help the presenters and teachers with their presentations and workshops.

Melanie Yazzie, MFA, professor of art practices and head of printmaking at the University of Colorado, gave the keynote, “Finding Strength in Community,” and spoke on connecting with indigenous people. Her visits to the Arctic, New Zealand, Russia and throughout the United States have been the impetus for continued dialogue about aboriginal cultural practices, language, song, storytelling and survival. In addition to showing her work, she shared with students and conference attendees about how to build community.

The conference featured large- and small-group discussions, studios and lectures centered on paintings, sculpture, digital art, advocacy, ceramics, cloth and more.
