Volunteer to Help Teachers in India Speak English in a Four-Week Online Course

Are you looking for a small way to stay connected to the Creighton and global Jesuit community abroad? Do you have one hour per week in October to connect with peers from around the world? Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to volunteer in a meaningful opportunity to virtually meet with college-level students in Nagaland, a mountainous region of India bordering Myanmar.

The Department of Education at Creighton is working with St. Paul’s Teacher Training College in Nagaland, India, to support the development of teachers in this region. In Nagaland, there are more than 500 different peoples in the region, all speaking different languages and with different cultures.

A critical step in the progress St. Paul’s is making in training teachers is to help teachers feel more confident speaking English. Through a collaborative, online, international learning project, the focus of this learning initiative has been to co-facilitate a four-week English Language Development course. The course is designed to provide opportunities for the St. Paul’s teachers-in-training to speak and interact with native English speakers one time per week.

The time commitment is low, and this volunteer opportunity will occur over Zoom. Volunteers will be provided discussion guides and rubrics to help them keep the conversation with their St. Paul’s partner engaging.

The four sessions will be 8 to 9 a.m. (CDT), 6 to 7 a.m. (MST), the following Thursdays in October:

  1. Oct. 7
  2. Oct. 14
  3. Oct. 21
  4. Oct. 28

If you cannot make it to all four sessions, that is fine. Please volunteer for as many sessions as you can. For any information, questions and to include your name on the volunteer list, please email [email protected] by Friday, Oct. 1.
