Mass of the Holy Spirit, Keynote Address Set for Phoenix

The annual Mass of the Holy Spirit will be held on both the Omaha and Phoenix campuses this year, followed by a keynote address by the Rev. Kevin FitzGerald, SJ, PhD, PhD, as part of Creighton’s Mission Week celebration. Campus masking requirements will be in effect.

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a centuries-old tradition among Jesuit institutions of higher learning whereby the community offers thanksgiving to God for the gifts of creation and asks for blessings upon the academic year.

On the Phoenix campus, the Mass will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 3:30 p.m. (MST) in the Doris S. Norton Ballroom on the first floor of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Health Sciences Building. A reception will follow on the first-floor foyer.

mission-weekClasses are canceled in Phoenix during the respective Masses, from 3-5 p.m. local time, to allow students to attend. However, clinicals and rotations for health sciences students will not be canceled at either campus.

Keynote

In Phoenix, Fr. FitzGerald will deliver his keynote address at 5:30 p.m. (MST) Sept. 8 in the Doris S. Norton Ballroom.

Fr. FitzGerald is an associate professor of medicine at Creighton and is chair of the Department of Medical Humanities. He also is the John A. Creighton University Professor and interim dean of the Graduate School. With PhDs in both molecular biology and bioethics, his research efforts focus on the investigation of abnormal gene expression in cancer; ethical issues in biomedical research and medical genomics; and integration of the humanities into health professions education.
