“Hobo girls,” women living as men, were among the most elusive of all hobos. From the 1870s through 1930s social workers, charities, and law enforcement across the nation saw these freight-hopping gender rebels as serious threats to the community and made every attempt to “correct” their lifestyle. This presentation delves into the history of hobos to reveal the fascinating lives of these queer figures and offer a new understanding of the relationship between gender and mobility.
