IELI Presents at MidTESOL Conference

Creighton’s Intensive English Language Institute staff all presented at the Mid-America Teachers of English as a Second Language (MidTESOL) conference in Omaha on September 28-29.

IELI Director Jill Fox and instructors Isabel Barros, Carissa Loughrey, and Susan Sullivan-Tuncan co-presented “More Than Just an Intensive English Program,” highlighting the teaching, tutoring, committee work, service, and other collaborations they’re doing at Creighton and beyond.

Isabel Barros also demonstrated will how printed advertisements of a similar product from the 1960s and 2010s were used to stimulate critical thinking and generate assignments in an Advanced English composition class.

Carissa Loughrey hosted a session on using literature circles, a structured and rigorous literary activity that encourages thoughtful discussion and fosters a love of reading.

All 3 instructors explained how they use a survey project for intensive English program students to become better informed about successful study skills and expectations for university courses.

Additionally, Dr. Fox presented with English program coordinators from Lindenwood University. The coordinators conducted a self-study on their program, and Dr. Fox served as their external reviewer. The three described the processes they followed, and advised how other programs could assure quality standards through an independent peer review.

MidTESOL is a regional affiliate of TESOL international, representing English language professionals from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri.
