Hanukkah Has Begun: Here are Four Things to Know

Hanukkah celebrates the miracle that only one vial of oil was found with just enough oil to illuminate the Temple lamp for a single day, and yet it lasted for eight full days. The Division of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion shares with faculty and staff four things to know about Hanukkah.

  • People may celebrate Hanukkah at home with their families by lighting the menorah and adding a new candle each night.
  • In addition, individuals may eat special foods, sing Hanukkah songs, and/or exchange gifts throughout the eight-day celebration.
  • Hanukkah follows the lunar calendar and may seem extra early this year when compared to dates for previous years.
  • This year, the Jewish holiday known as the Festival of Lights began on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 28, and will end the evening of Monday, Dec. 6, 2021.
