Since 1968, American’s have honored or celebrated the contributions of Hispanic and Latina/o/x communities. What started as a week-long celebration in June by Californian Congressman George E. Brown has since expanded to a month-long celebration from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. We take time in this period to celebrate the histories, vibrant cultures, and contributions of individuals whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
While most heritage and history months start on the first of the month, the Sept. 15 date is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
