Williams to Present on the Politics of Birth Control in Nigeria

Ogechukwu Williams, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of History and Medical Humanities, will present a paper, titled “Birth Control Under Whatever Name: The International Population Control Movement and the Development of Family Planning in Nigeria,” at this year’s annual African Studies Association meeting.

Her paper examines the politics of birth control in Nigeria from the 1950s to the 1980s, and the avenues through which Western concerns about regulating fertility became localized for a Nigerian audience through alliances with educational institutions, outreach to men and partnerships with postpartum programs.
