Mary Ann Danielson, PhD, Professor of Communication Studies, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award at the annual meeting of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) in Bergen, Norway, on Oct. 27, 2018. This award recognizes individuals who have made contributions to both ISSoTL and SoTL more broadly through his/her career.
As noted in her nomination letters, Dr. Danielson has a solid record of SoTL scholarship and advocacy; played a key role in the evolution of the SoTL work supported by the US Carnegie Foundation through its CASTL institutional leadership clusters; and served tirelessly on the ISSOTL Board of Directors for many years. In the words of her nominators, she is described as an “advocate, mentor, and guide,” who has the ability to “make magic happen,” and argue that “she has been a constant source of insight and collaboration for the Society. . . .[who] makes the work of everyone else better. In fact, one wrote, “In the last decade I can think of no single person who has made more important and constant contributions to the growth of ISSOTL.” Another nominator concluded, “we would be hard pressed to find anyone more committed to the work of the scholarship of teaching and learning, more successful in implementing quality national and local collaborative programs, or more dedicated to the success of ISSOTL.”
The Distinguished Service Award was created in 2009 and the inaugural recipients of this award were Pat Hutchings and Craig Nelson. Other recipients include: Keith Trigwell and Mike Prosser (2010); Barbara Cambridge and Mary Taylor Huber (2011); Gary Poole (2012); Lee Shulman (2013); Dan Bernstein and Mick Healey (2015); Jennifer Meta Robinson (2016); Nancy Chick (2017); and Mary Ann Danielson and Peter Felten (2018).
