Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL) August Updates

  • On Sept. 19 and 20, Creighton University will be hosting a meeting of JWL Academic Liaisons from across the United States. These liaisons help enlist volunteer faculty from their institutions to teach online courses in certificate and diploma courses for students living at the margins across the world, especially in refugee camps in Africa and Asia. The purpose of this meeting will be to identify additional ways in which our universities can contribute to the wellbeing of displaced persons.
  • In Spring 2017 five Creighton students enrolled in two JWL online courses: Religions of the World or Introduction to Political Thought, and a Creighton Course, IDC 320: Jesuit Worldwide Learning: Global Perspectives in Liberal Arts. Each student completed a JWL course with circa 15 students living at the margins. Creighton students then became teaching assistants with a different cohort of the same course, also with circa 15 students living at the margins. In addition, each student in the IDC 320 course interacted with refugees or people working in refugee services within the Omaha community. This pilot program, funded by a Creighton Global Initiative, will be repeated in Spring 2018.
  • Martha Habash, PhD, Creighton University’s JWL liaison, is spearheading an effort to enroll 20 JWL diploma graduates into Creighton’s online bachelor programs in Leadership and Healthy Lifestyle Management. A Creighton Global Initiative grant will support faculty development and course refinement as well as provide educational supplies for these students. Four students are expected to enroll annually beginning spring 2018.
