Institute for Latin American Concern August Updates

  • A total of 506 individuals are expected to participate in our 26 volunteer programs in the Dominican Republic by the end of 2017:
    • 168 faculty and students provided health-related services in clinics and rural communities in spring and summer, and 13 nursing students will do so in the fall;
    • 175 health professionals volunteered through 5 medical mission trips in spring 2017;
    • 125 high school students served through 9 high school trips;
    • 25 faculty and students from 2 other universities participated in short-term courses.
  • The Creighton ILAC office is sponsoring a “Se la Luz” family and intimate partner violence seminar h for 160 ILAC health promoters and 30 ILAC-DR staff on September 5th and 6th in the Dominican Republic.
  • David Chait, MD, will lead 37 health professionals in a surgical ENT mission at the ILAC Center October 7-14. The Pediatric Mission will provide free surgical care to over 100 children.
  • A Creighton Hernia Mission will be held Nov. 4-11, providing hernia repair to over 100 patients in the Dominican Republic.
  • Creighton ILAC is partnering with the School of Nursing for Fall Break Nursing Community Health Immersion in the Dominican Republic. Eight senior nursing students will be partnering with a rural Dominican community and lay health leaders to assess health needs and engage the community in preventative health discussion.
